About Sheffield

Why students choose Sheffield

We list 48 Sheffield student stays, from £75/week, checked 18 September 2026.

Sheffield is the cheapest city on this site, and not by a small margin. The typical room here costs less than the cheapest room we list in London, Bristol, Edinburgh or Manchester. If your budget is the thing deciding where you apply, that is worth knowing early.

It is also unusually honest about its prices. In most cities the advertised rate belongs to one room in one building and everything else costs a good deal more. In Sheffield the gap between the cheapest room and the typical one is the narrowest of any city we list, so what you see quoted is closer to what you will actually pay.

Every room we list here includes bills, so the weekly rates on this page can be compared directly against each other.

We hold no neighbourhood data for Sheffield yet, so this page does not tell you which area to pick. What it can tell you is what things cost, what formats exist and what to ask. Use the map on the listings above to place them.

Read the guide
  • Both universities are central, which is rarer than it sounds

Sheffield has two: the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Both sit in or beside the city centre, and the nearest property we list is about a quarter of a mile from either.

That is worth knowing because in a lot of cities you have to pick a side. Here you mostly do not. A central room will usually work for either university, which widens your shortlist rather than splitting it, and it means you can choose on price and room format instead of on geography.

Check the exact figure on the property page anyway. A quarter of a mile is the nearest, not the average.

  • Top Sheffield universities and campus links

Sheffield hosts thousands of local and international students each academic year. When choosing where to live, prioritise a walking-distance or single-transfer commute to your specific university department, this saves 60 to 90 minutes a day of travel time.

Each Sheffield property page shows the nearest universities and the typical commute by public transport. If you know which the United Kingdom university you are attending, filter for properties within a 20 minute journey to make the shortlist manageable.

  • How much cheaper Sheffield actually is

Cheapest room we currently list: £75/week. Across the whole city our properties average considerably more than that, but the distance between the two is smaller here than in any other city on this site.

That matters when you are comparing quotes. A headline rate in a more expensive city usually means the one room nobody wants, on the top floor, facing a wall. Here it is closer to a genuine option.

Bills are included in every room we list, so you can treat the weekly rate as close to the full housing cost. Add food, travel and a phone, and you have most of your budget.

  • Ask about the discount

Close to a third of the Sheffield properties on this page are advertising something right now: cashback, a few weeks rent free, or a reduced deposit. That is a higher proportion than most cities we cover.

Offers move around and they are rarely on the page you land on. If you like a building, ask us what is currently on it before you commit. It is a two minute question that has been worth a few hundred pounds to people.

  • You can afford your own bathroom here

Roughly a third of the rooms we list in Sheffield are en-suite, which is one of the highest shares of any city on this site. Sheffield also has the lowest prices. Those two things usually pull against each other, and here they do not.

Shared rooms and studios exist in about equal numbers, so you are choosing rather than taking what is left. A room in a shared flat will be the cheapest. An en-suite gives you your own bathroom and a shared kitchen. A studio gives you both to yourself and costs the most.

If you are deciding between a shared flat and an en-suite, ask how many people share the kitchen. Six and twelve are very different years.

  • Two things worth asking

    • How many weeks am I actually paying for. Ask for the start and end dates rather than a number of weeks, then check them against your term. A low weekly rate over 51 weeks can beat a higher one over 44.
    • What happens if my plans change. Twenty different operators run the buildings on this page and each sets its own cancellation terms. Ask what happens if your visa is refused or your place moves, and get the answer in writing.

We will ask both for you on any room here. That is what the enquiry does.

Neither is Sheffield specific, and the same checks apply anywhere.
